Dr. Wendy Newton

My Client-Focused Approach

I work with adults who are experiencing a broad range of mental health problems including depression, anxiety, addictions, and trauma. I do this by helping my clients understand the roots of their feelings and reactions then identifying ways to manage them more skillfully. I provide both short-term and longer-term therapy, tailoring the treatment plan to the needs and strengths of each client.

The therapy I offer is warm, practical, and reassuring.

I believe that the therapeutic relationship is the foundation for personal growth, healing and change.

The most effective relationships are based on collaboration, compassion, and respect, and that is what I strive to provide. I see myself as an advocate for my clients.

I use a multi-dimensional and integrative approach to therapy that is grounded in research. It has been very effective for my clients dealing with a wide range of emotional and behavioral struggles and includes:

For some people, short-term therapy is all that is needed; others need a longer-term approach. I will work with you to identify your goals and help you navigate a path to achieve them. Typically, sessions start out once per week, then they can be spaced out as needed once you are feeling better.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about my approach to therapy.

Professional Background

Prior to becoming a clinical psychologist, I was a community planner in Washington, DC. In that role, I worked with communities to create better lives for the residents through their built environment by improving the quality of their homes, neighborhoods, and commercial districts. It was that work that sparked my interest in helping adults improve the quality of their lives through their “internal” worlds. In 1993, I moved with my family to Portland to pursue my education and career in clinical psychology. Since then I have worked in a variety of clinical settings helping my clients create more satisfying lives for themselves. I now devote my work to my private practice which I opened in 2001.
